DescriptionThe study provides a detailed analysis of the economic support for the principal churches in Transylvania in the period 1850-1863. It examines the revenue sources of the Romanian clergy, both Orthodox and Uniate, and compares them to the much higher revenue of the churches frequented by the Hungarians and Germans. This finding lends some plausibility to contemporary assertions that Austria sought through state subsidies to secure the loyalty of the Romanian clergy on the eve of the provincial elections of 1863. Then as now, churches' economic dependence can lead to their political subordination.
